Trends in proportion of older HIV-infected people in care in Latin America and the Caribbean: a growing challenge

We aimed to quantify the proportion of people receiving care for HIV-infection that are 50 years or older (older HIV patients) in Latin America and the Caribbean between 2000 and 2015 and to estimate the contribution to the growth of this population of people enrolled before (<50yo) and after 50 years old (yo) (⩾50yo). We used a series of repeated, cross-sectional measurements over time in the Caribbean, Central and South American network (CCASAnet) cohort. We estimated the percentage of patients retained in care each year that were older HIV patients. For every calendar year, we divided patients into two groups: those who enrolled before age 50 and after age 50. We used logistic regression models to estimate the change in the proportion of older HIV patients between 2000 and 2015. The percentage of CCASAnet HIV patients over 50 years had a threefold increase (8% to 24%) between 2000 and 2015. Most of the growth of this population can be explained by the increasing proportion of people that enrolled before 50 years and aged in care. These changes will impact needs of care for people living with HIV, due to multiple comorbidities and high risk of disability associated with aging.
Influence of chemical disorder on energy dissipation and defect evolution in advanced alloys

Historically, alloy development with better radiation performance has been focused on traditional alloys with one or two principal element(s) and minor alloying elements, where enhanced radiation resistance depends on microstructural or nanoscale features to mitigate displacement damage. In sharp contrast to traditional alloys, recent advances of single-phase concentrated solid solution alloys (SP-CSAs) have opened up new frontiers in materials research. In these alloys, a random arrangement of multiple elemental species on a crystalline lattice results in disordered local chemical environments and unique site-to-site lattice distortions. Based on closely integrated computational and experimental studies using a novel set of SP-CSAs in a face-centered cubic structure, we have explicitly demonstrated that increasing chemical disorder can lead to a substantial reduction in electron mean free paths, as well as electrical and thermal conductivity, which results in slower heat dissipation in SP-CSAs. The chemical disorder also has a significant impact on defect evolution under ion irradiation. Considerable improvement in radiation resistance is observed with increasing chemical disorder at electronic and atomic levels. The insights into defect dynamics may provide a basis for understanding elemental effects on evolution of radiation damage in irradiated materials and may inspire new design principles of radiation-tolerant structural alloys for advanced energy systems.

Demography of the Serengeti cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) population: the first 25 years

Data are presented on the demography and reproductive success of cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus) living on the Serengeti Plains, Tanzania over a 25-year period. Average age at independence was 17.1 months, females gave birth to their first litter at approximately 2.4 years old, interbirth interval was 20.1 months, and average litter size at independence was 2.1 cubs. Females who survived to independence lived on average 6.2 years while minimum male average longevity was 2.8 years for those born in the study area and 5.3 years for immigrants, with a large proportion of males dispersing out of the Plains population. Females produced on average only 1.7 cubs to independence in their entire lifetime and their average reproductive rates were 0.36 cubs per year or 0.17 litters per year to independence. Variance in lifetime reproductive success in the cheetah is similar to that of other mammals.
No significant negative correlations were found between adult cheetah population size and numbers of cubs reaching independence, implying that the Plains population had not reached carrying capacity. Annual numbers of adult female cheetahs only were correlated with rainfall. Adult female cheetah numbers were not correlated with adult female lion numbers on the Plains, however, reproductive rates of cheetahs were negatively correlated with the presence of lions while cheetahs had cubs. Moreover, cheetah reproductive success was lower during the period of high lion abundance (1980-1994) than during the earlier period of relatively few lions (1969-1979). Litter size at independence dropped from 2.5 to 2.0, lifetime reproductive success declined from 2.1 to 1.6 cubs reared to independence, and the reproductive rate (cubs/year) decreased from 0.42 to 0.36 from the earlier to the later period.
Cheetah reproductive success showed little association with the presence of Thomson's gazelle at sightings except for a negative correlation between large numbers of gazelle (200±500) and reproductive success possibly because hunting success decreases with increasing prey herd size, or because cheetahs always lose in direct competition with other predators which are attracted to large congregations of prey. In addition, cheetah reproductive success was negatively correlated with the presence of Grant's gazelles (11 or more) perhaps because Grant's gazelles were more likely to occur consistently in dry areas.

The little church of Berrow, which lies behind the sandhills on the Somerset coast of the Bristol Channel a few miles north of Burnham, has a nave, chancel, and south aisle only. Its walls were besmeared with a thick coat of modern plaster, on the removal of which a niche of considerable dimensions was found in the centre of the north wall (fig. 1). Its projecting ornaments had been stripped off and its cavity built up flush with the general wall line with brickwork on edge that could not have been much later than the Commonwealth. On the removal of these bricks a tabernacle cross-head was found behind them. It was in eleven fragments; one large main piece comprising all the figures, seven small ones, whose fractures fitted on exactly, and which I have put back into their proper positions, and three others belonging to the lost upper part, which cannot be replaced. All are in Ham Hill stone. In addition to these there were inserted in the niche many fragments of carved work in a different stone, some of which may have been parts of the niche itself or, more possibly, of a reredos, but there is no certainty. On visiting the church to examine and report on these fragments I naturally set on foot a search for the cross-base, and was soon rewarded. Some 30 ft. south of the porch was a fragment of an octagonal shaft, II in. in diameter, and projecting some 9 in. above the ground, which rises sharply at this point from the level of the porch entrance.

Professor Willis's plan in his Architectural History of the Monastery of Christ Church lays down very clearly the form of the Capella Infirmorum and its relation t o the Domus Infirmorum and surrounding buildings. The chapel was of late Norman construction, and consisted of a short nave and aisles of four bays, with a square-ended chancel. The nave has a characteristic Norman clearstory, and was separated from the chancel by a chancel arch, but the main features of the nave exist in situ for any one to examine, and need not detain us. The chancel was lighted by two Norman windows on each side, which were shafted, had late Norman, almost Transitional, carved capitals and a rich zigzagged archivolt. In the east wall were three windows of similar detail. The normal thickness of the chancel walls is ft. 2 in. They were unbuttressed, and the whole was ceiled with a plain barrel vault, covering a span of 26 ft, somewhat wide for so small a building.

I am not quite sure how far the later records of Canterbury Cathedral are of sufficient importance to interest this Society, but, as we have long learnt that neither archaeology nor traditional architecture stop short in the middle of the sixteenth century, I exhibit two oil paintings of the interior of the choir of Canterbury Cathedral as in the latter half of the seventeenth century, and offer some notes upon them. A study of later documents, chiefly relating to destructions or replacements, certainly helps to throw light upon earlier history.
